So THAT'S what's been eating the old dog food

Well, it appears that our resident critter isn't a raccoon after all. SuperDad came home from work last night and spied this little guy (okay, maybe not so little) in the crepe myrtle tree that overhangs the front porch:

"If I hold reeeeealy still, they can't see me."

Evidently, I've fed him so well that he doesn't want to leave. Last week or so, I cleaned out the refrigerator and dumped some leftovers in a plastic bowl. Instead of traipsing off into the field to dump it myself, I set it outside next to the porch. Our mystery critter, apparently this possum, has been eating out of it at night when we're not looking. It just so happened that SuperDad came home later than usual last night, so maybe he spooked Mr. Opossum up into the tree. I've seen plenty of possums up close and they usually will either open their mouth really wide and show their teeth, or they'll get really still and pretend to be dead, which is what this guy did. I tried to get a shot of his face, but he only looked at me when I wasn't armed with a digital camera. I even tried calling "Here, Kitty Kitty!" But to no avail. He just got really still and appeared to stare off into space. It was kind of funny, to be honest. Like a cow, hiding its head behind a tree, like we can't see the big ol' cow hiney sticking out both sides. I guess they'll never learn that just because you can't see me, it doesn't mean I can't see you. My kids have yet to grasp that concept, too.

Our dog used to tree them in our backyard on a regular basis. DH built a big building where my garden was so the possums don't come around here anymore.

I'm afraid I'd have to move. Those critters creep me out. With their beedy eyes and all.

Clearly, I've lived in the city far too long.
